A 15-year-old slice of modern British history is making headlines as a piece of fruit cake from Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 2011 royal wedding is going up for sale.

This is not the first time a slice from this cake has hit the market. In 2014, as reported by TIME, the slices were auctioned, and one piece fetched around $7,500 at Julien's Auctions.

The piece of fruit cake measuring three inches by two inches is preserved in paper and has been kept in its commemorative tin titled 'William and Catherine, April 29, 2011.'

The slice was saved by Juli Kavanagh, who is a friend of the Duchess of Cambridge. Other wedding day mementos and two charming cards from the princess were also saved, as per The Independent.

The mementos are being auctioned at Forum Auctions located in London. Rupert Powell, specialist at Forum Auctions, said, "Material relating to the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton captures a defining moment in modern royal history — an event watched by millions around the world and already viewed with considerable nostalgia."

The royal family frequently sees its personal items turned into high-priced collector pieces. Princess Diana’s wardrobe is the ultimate example of this obsession. Her famous dresses have sold for jaw-dropping amounts.

A black and blue Jacques Azagury evening dress worn by Diana in 1985 recently broke records by selling for over $1.1 million.

Queen Elizabeth’s 77-Year-Old Wedding Cake Was Sold for $3,000

Old royal cakes are very popular with buyers. Recently, a 77-year-old slice of cake from Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's 1947 wedding was sold at auction for around $3,000.

It was found inside a suitcase in an attic, still wrapped in its original box, and was bought by an enthusiastic collector named Gerry Layton.

Layton had shared shocking plans for the historic snack. “I will have a third of it cut off and flambéed in rum so that any bacteria will be killed off,” Layton explained, as per Parade.

He jokingly added, “But if anything happens to me, then at least I will be going out in style.”

There is history behind these royal desserts. Ever since the days of Queen Victoria, British royals have traditionally chosen classic fruit cakes for their weddings.

Fruit cake is chosen as it contains heavy amounts of dried fruit and alcohol, like brandy. The alcohol preserves the cake naturally over time.
