Donald Trump faces flak over new U.S. passport plan.
‘One Man's Megalomania’: Trump Sparks Outrage Over Plans to Feature His Face on U.S. Passports
After sparking debate over the renaming of Kennedy Center to the Trump-Kennedy Center in December 2025, President Donald Trump is raising eyebrows yet again -- this time, involving reports of a proposed change in the U.S. passport.
The State Department is finalizing a plan to redesign the U.S. passport to include an image of Trump on the inside cover, according to an exclusive report from The Bulwark.
The move is reportedly being planned as part of commemorations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Donald Trump's Image Might Feature on Inside Cover of U.S. Passports
Sources have told The Bulwark that a passport redesign is underway at the State Department.
The proposed changes would feature an image of Trump on the inside cover, sourced from his second inaugural portrait.
The image will reportedly be superimposed over the Declaration of Independence, with Trump's signature rendered in gold.
The White House unveils the new U.S. passport design.
The back cover would feature a traditional image of the Declaration of Independence as depicted in the painting by John Trumbull.
However, officials have not yet finalized which specific image of Trump will be used.
The Bulwark said that it reached out to the White House for comment, and a spokesperson initially requested an extension on the deadline because they said the authorities were “looking into” the proposed plan.
The spokesperson then reportedly reached out to the media outlet after a couple of hours with confirmation of the new designs and a link to a Fox News report.
Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi Slams Donald Trump Over Passport Redesign
According to The Mirror US, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, a Democrat from Illinois, has strongly criticized the proposed redesign and lashed out at the president for the same.
Krishnamoorthi called it a bizarre move and claimed that it only served the purpose of inflating Trump's ego.
"Putting Donald Trump's face on U.S. passports is absurd," he said.
"These documents represent the American people — not one man's megalomania," Krishnamoorthi added.
Krishnamoorthi also noted that U.S. passports are issued in the name of the Secretary of State rather than the president, and that foreign passports do not typically feature heads of state.
According to The Bulwark, Trump has pushed for the Save America Act, which would require individuals to present proof of citizenship, including a passport, in order to cast a vote.
As a result, the proposed passport redesign would expand the number of Americans who need to obtain a passport as official identification.
