The U.S. figure skating star has made bold statements relating to her appearance and identity, which have become talking points for fans. “These days, I say no to more things that I used to say yes to. I like to hear people out, and I like to try new things but I trust my instincts,” she told Nike, adding, “When I came back to figure skating, people said I would have to change my hair and I said, ‘No, I won’t be changing my hair.’ People give me song suggestions, and I’ll take them into consideration, but if I don’t like something, I’m not going to skate to it. I want to make choices that feel like me.”

Liu’s statements are reflective of her mindset: she is confident about making her own decisions. She refuses to be a victim of the noise, demanding that she does things differently.

Liu is Challenging Tradition

The 20-year-old’s refusal to change her hairstyle might not seem too special at first glance. But, in the context and culture of figure-skating, her stance is worth noting. For the uninitiated, figure-skaters have long been expected to mold into an image: someone who is polished, elegant, and traditional.

But when Liu made her return to figure-skating after a two-year career break, she challenged that notion. From her unique hairstyle to her piercings and bold fashion choices, Liu has embraced authenticity over tradition at every turn. Her look has earned widespread praise, particularly from younger fans who admire her unapologetic expression of her individuality.

Liu’s appearances even outside the skating arena, including a viral outfit at the Oscars 2026 weekend, have only reinforced her self-assured image in the public eye. Social media was quickly filled with reactions, with many applauding her confidence and distinctive sense of style.

The Olympic gold medalist says she has been saying 'no' to things more frequently.

Liu’s approach to life and experiences

Liu’s path has been far from conventional. She first gained attention as a child prodigy, winning a national title at just 13. However, the intense pressure of the high-stakes competition led her to step away from the sport during her teens. When she returned nearly two years later, her perspective had shifted. She focused more on enjoying the sport and expressing herself, rather than meeting expectations.

“At the end of the day, if it’s not a ‘hell yes,’ it’s a ‘hell no’,” Liu told Nike, talking about how she now approaches activities and opportunities. “I still say yes to a lot of things, but I’m more intentional about it. I don’t really have regrets. You live, and you learn. A big part of getting to that was learning to stop shutting down my own feelings and needs and no longer putting certain people on a pedestal,” she said.
