Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal has drawn national attention after her remarks on the treatment of undocumented immigrants during Donald Trump’s time in office. In a video from a congressional hearing posted on social media on Friday, Jayapal argued that Trump should pay “reparations” for the “trauma” she says immigration enforcement has inflicted on immigrant families under his administration.

The Democrat, who is the top Democrat on the House immigration panel, made her comments during a hearing she hosted titled “Kidnapped and Disappeared: Trump’s Attack on Our Children.” There, she also suggested that those involved in implementing strict immigration policies could face legal consequences in the future.

While speaking at a recent hearing, Pramila Jayapal called for “accountability” over immigration policies. She said people who harmed undocumented immigrants should face legal action and be held responsible.

“We need real accountability, because at the end of the day, the people that have been inflicting this harm need to be prosecuted,” Jayapal said. “They need to be brought before us and they need to be held accountable for the trauma that they have created, and we are going to have to have some form of reparation.”

Suggesting that some form of reparations is needed to address the emotional trauma faced by families, Jayapal strongly opposed Trump’s immigration crackdown. Overall, the issue has become more intense after a series of violent clashes in Minnesota earlier this year.

During the incident, federal agents were involved in multiple shootings, including two deaths, which led to public anger. The clash took place after Trump deployed ICE in Minnesota to investigate welfare fraud involving Somali migrants.

Following these events, many Democratic lawmakers, including Jayapal, pushed for stricter rules on immigration enforcement. Meanwhile, Senate Democrats have blocked funding for the Department of Homeland Security, thus increasing the political tension around immigration policies.
