Winston-Salem Police Capt. Kevin Burns said four female teenagers, ages 14, 15, 17 and 19, and one 18-year-old were shot. They were found in a nearby parking lot and sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical. Burns said the names of the injured minors will not be released, while the names of the adults are being withheld as their involvement remains under investigation.

During a press conference on Monday, he said, “Detectives are actively working to determine each individual's role in this incident. Preliminary information indicates that some of those injured may have also been involved in the shooting.”

Winston-Salem Police Chief William H. Penn remains unclear about the number of firearms involved in the incident. The police also stated that the incident was confined to the park and remains under investigation. Notably, Leinbach Park is located near a middle school, but police assured that the students were safe. Nonetheless, Chief Penn expressed his frustration and anger over the deadly incident.

He said, “I feel like everyone else. I’m frustrated, I’m angry, I’m sad. This didn't have to happen. It's senseless. And hopefully we as a community kind of get fed up together and just get more involved, get more nosy.”

Residents are reportedly in shock after mass shooting.

During the press conference, he also urged parents to speak with their children and recommended taking necessary steps, such as checking their children's backpacks before school. In his words, “We gotta tell them to stay away from fights. I feel like I just had the same conversation about cellphones, fights and how just having those phones out, how that changes the behavior of our youth. And I’m saying it again -- stay away from the fights. It’s not the same as it used to be.”

Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O'Neill supported Burns' suggestion to parents and urged residents to report planned fights to help prevent violence.

He said, “I can’t help but believe that somebody out there would have known about this fight taking place this morning and didn’t pick up a phone and anonymously call, and this could have been averted.”

O'Neill acknowledged the community's grief, noting that the tragedy may have been preventable.
