Nick Cannon explained that his daughter Monroe Cannon did not intend to dismiss her younger half-siblings when she wrote online that she had “one brother.” He clarified that this viral comment originated from a teenage conversation that went beyond its original context.

Cannon, 45, discussed the reaction during an April 29 appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast.

This conversation came after Monroe, 15, attracted attention in November 2025 for an Instagram Story about her siblings.

Nick Cannon explains his daughter's viral comment.

Monroe is Cannon’s daughter with Mariah Carey, who also shares Monroe’s twin brother, Moroccan Cannon, with him.

The Wild ’n Out host mentioned that people misunderstood the comment, especially after discussions about his large family emerged online. Cannon has 12 children, including Monroe and Moroccan. He told Sharpe that the exchange was just “14-year-olds talking.” Monroe wanted to respond to some teenagers online who claimed to be related to her and Moroccan.

At the time, Monroe stated that she had “one brother,” referring to Moroccan, while also acknowledging that her father has other children. The comment quickly spread on the internet because Cannon is also the father of 10 younger children with several women.

Cannon stated that Monroe was talking about the sibling closest to her in age and daily life, not denying her family ties.

“My daughter wanted to clear it up,” Cannon said on the podcast, according to E! News, adding that Monroe meant Moroccan was the only brother in her age group.

Cannon and Mariah Carey's daughter went viral for her IG story.

Cannon explained that the public reaction upset Monroe, as people interpreted her post as rejection of her younger siblings. He mentioned that Monroe later told him she did not mean to convey that idea and had already acknowledged that her father has other children.

Cannon and Carey welcomed Monroe and Moroccan on April 30, 2011. The former couple married in 2008, announced their separation in 2014, and finalized their divorce in 2016.

Cannon also has Golden “Sagon,” Powerful Queen, and Rise Messiah with Brittany Bell; twins Zion Mixolydian and Zillion Heir, and daughter Beautiful Zeppelin, with Abby De La Rosa; son Legendary Love with Bre Tiesi; daughter Onyx Ice with LaNisha Cole; and daughter Halo Marie with Alyssa Scott.

Cannon and Scott also had a son, Zen, who passed away in 2021 at 5 months old after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

The entertainer noted that Monroe and Moroccan have spent time with some of their younger siblings. He remarked that the viral reaction did not accurately reflect the family’s relationships.

Cannon also took the opportunity to discuss social media with Monroe, emphasizing how easily a comment can spread.

He told his daughter that she does not need to explain herself to strangers, but she should recognize that posts can gain unexpected attention once they reach a large audience.

This clarification comes as Cannon has frequently talked about fatherhood and the challenges of managing a large blended family. His family life has attracted ongoing interest in interviews, on social media, and in entertainment news.

Cannon said Monroe’s post illustrated how quickly a private teenage disagreement can turn into a public story, especially involving a famous family.

He emphasized that the lesson for his daughter was not about avoiding public attention, but about understanding how people can interpret social media comments without knowing the full context.
