'Nervous' Meghan Markle Has ‘No Plans to See Her Estranged Father’ Despite His Return to America
Meghan Markle has reignited speculations of a possible rift with her father, Thomas Markle.
The distance between the two reportedly increased after Thomas spoke publicly about Meghan and her relationship with the British royals.
Since then, the father-daughter relationship has remained strained, with little to no contact between them, according to reports.
Despite being married for nearly eight years and raising a family together, Meghan is yet to introduce her husband, Prince Harry, to her father, in person.
Now that the 81-year-old is returning to the U.S., the duchess of Sussex is reportedly feeling “nervous” about a possible interaction with her father.
Thomas Markle to Move Back to the U.S.
An X post about Thomas Markle's plan to return to the U.S.
Thomas had been residing in the Philippines since 2025. In January 2025, he moved to Cebu with his son, Thomas Markle Jr., and stayed there until May 2026.
Thomas suffered major health issues after being trapped in his apartment during the massive 6.9-magnitude earthquake that hit the Philippines.
Samantha, the daughter of Thomas and half-sister of Meghan, told the The Mirror UK that her father was “stuck on the 19th floor of a building” and could not escape because he “couldn’t walk and [was] trapped.”
Thomas' condition later became more serious, as his son, Markle Jr. told the Daily Mail, “His foot turned blue and then black. It happened very quickly... They did some scans and an ultrasound and said the leg had to be amputated.”
Two months after the earthquake, Thomas was admitted to a hospital for an emergency procedure.
During the health scare, he reportedly pleaded with Meghan to contact him, saying he wanted to see her “one more time before [he] die[s].”
Although Meghan’s representative claimed she did “reach out,” Samantha denied it, saying, “Houston there’s been no contact… Time to stop the PR bulls–t Medusa.”
Meanwhile, the 81-year-old is now moving back to the United States to pursue “ongoing medical care.”
“He will be… surrounded by family and friends to support him. He will be able to get the best prosthetics here. Even though he has been through such traumatic times, this has been a positive spiritual experience for dad,” Samantha shared.
Insiders Weigh in on Meghan Markle's Relationship With Her Father
Meanwhile, as Thomas prepares to return to the United States for medical care, reports suggest that there is still no reunion planned with Meghan.
According to royal biographer Hugo Vickers, the duchess of Sussex may be avoiding contact because she is worried about what her father could reveal to Harry.
“I think more likely she (is) nervous that he might say something to Prince Harry,” Vickers said, according to GB News.
“It was, in fact, a member of Prince Harry's family who suggested that she might have been nervous of what he might say,” he added.
Vickers also defended Thomas, saying, “He was good to her when she was growing up. If you listen to what he says as opposed to how his words are reported, you will find a decent man who must feel extremely let down.”
Yet, sources told RadarOnline that there is “still no sign of a reconciliation” between Markle and her father.
An insider stated, “People are questioning how Meghan continue(s) to keep such a distance when the circumstances are so stark.”
“There is a perception that this is one of the most difficult chapters in their relationship, and the most brutal family move Meghan has ever made, as she has no plans to see her estranged father despite his ill health,” the insider added.
