Masked Figure Caught on Nancy Guthrie’s Doorbell Cam — Ex-FBI Agent Shares Theory On Why the Suspect Risked Being Seen
As the Nancy Guthrie disappearance case enters its eighth week of investigation, a retired Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent has shared her insights into why she thinks a masked figure was captured on the doorbell camera footage of the 84-year-old.
Nancy, the mother of Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing from her house on February 1, 2026, after she remained absent at a virtual church service. Despite weeks of investigation, law enforcement officials have yet to announce any suspects or make any arrests.
Footage released earlier from outside Nancy's house showed a masked individual at the front entrance. The person was wearing gloves and was carrying a 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack. Police also believe that the individual was armed.
Former FBI Agent Shares New Theory about Nancy’s Potential Abductor
Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer shared her theory about Nancy's abductor on Hidden Killers. "His right hand is knocking and his left hand, I think, is trying to open the door," Coffindaffer said, according to Daily Express US.
Coffindaffer reportedly admitted that her theory is a "reach." However, she suspected that there was another person inside Guthrie's Catalina Hills residence on the fateful night, when the masked figure was detected on CCTV. She questioned why the person did not just block the camera with their hand instead of appearing to tamper with it.
According to the news outlet, the former FBI agent suspected the abductor gained access via the back entrance before departing through the front. "I think that's the entry, and they said, 'We're not going to take her out where we went in because we've got to walk around the whole house’," Jennifer stated.
Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer theorized that another person was present inside Nancy Guthrie's home when the masked suspect appeared at the front porch.
She also explained why she thinks the suspect would risk using the monitored front entrance. "You've got to think where the car would be. That circle drive is right there," she said.
"Basically, now you have wounded Nancy, and you have to walk such a short distance compared to taking her out, walking around the entirety of the house, not 100 percent understanding where the cameras might be, not sure if you're going to get caught on a motion camera or anything else from a neighbour," Coffindaffer added.
Case Still Active, Officials Say
Nancy Guthrie was reported missing from her Tucson, Arizona residence on February 1, 2026.
Authorities believe Nancy was likely kidnapped from her home. This follows the discovery of blood stains on her property, while her personal belongings were left behind. At the same time, the search for Nancy has been scaled down to "15 or 20" investigators. However, officials say that the case is still active and not considered a "cold case" yet.
Since their mother's disappearance, NBC News anchor Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have shared several videos online, making appeals to Nancy's potential abductor. They have offered a $1 million reward for any information that helps bring their mother back, on top of the $100,000 reward from the FBI.
So far, officials have found some clues, including DNA evidence and possible ransom notes, but no suspect has been identified yet. According to the BBC, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, who is leading the case with the FBI, said that authorities think the 84-year-old may have been specifically targeted, but added that they are "not 100% sure of that."
