‘Jokes Are Jokes’: George Clooney Defends Jimmy Kimmel Over Melania Trump 'Expectant Widow' Quip
Actor George Clooney defended Jimmy Kimmel at the 51st Chaplin Awards, saying that the latter's "expectant widow" joke about First Lady Melania Trump was taken out of context.
This comes after President Donald Trump and the first lady publicly slammed Kimmel called on ABC to fire the late-night host following a shooting incident during the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) dinner on Saturday, April 25.

Speaking at the 51st Chaplin Awards event, Clooney addressed the ongoing outrage over Kimmel’s parody skit on the WHCA dinner party.
According to Variety, the Up in the Air actor believed that Kimmel’s joke was blown out of proportion and taken out of context.
He said, “Jimmy’s a comedian, and I would argue that Karoline Leavitt didn’t mean shots should be fired.”
Clooney noted that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had also made a remark about shots being fired before the dinner.
“You look at that side and go, ’Well, jokes are jokes.’ But the rhetoric is a little dangerous. And we’ve seen it a lot lately,” he said.

Clooney stated that the rhetoric had become "a little too heated," adding that the response to Kimmel's joke had escalated to calls for serious consequences.
He shared his family's guiding principle, saying, “My father’s rule when we were growing up was to challenge people with more power. That’s always been our mantra.”
The actor also said that he has "faith in the press" and supports a free press. "We need to be able to have a free and fair press," he added.

Clooney's remarks referenced Leavitt's pre-dinner comment on Fox News, in which she said, "It'll be funny, it'll be entertaining, there will be some shots fired tonight in the room, so everyone should tune in."
The controversy followed Kimmel's mock White House Correspondents' dinner monologue, in which he said, "Our first lady, Melania, is here. So beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow."
A shooting occurred during the actual dinner on April 25, when a man named Cole Tomas Allen was charged with attempting to assassinate Trump.
The president subsequently wrote on Truth Social criticizing Kimmel's ratings and called on Disney and ABC to fire him, also noting that that the TV had previously been suspended in September 2025.
In response to Kimmel's remarks, Melania wrote on X, "Kimmel's hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country," saying his jokes "deepen the political sickness within America."
Jimmy Kimmel Reacts to Outrage Over 'Widow' Joke
Kimmel addressed the controversy during a subsequent monologue, saying his "expectant widow" joke was not a call for violence.
"We've all been there, right?" he said to audience laughter.
He clarified that the remark was "a very light roast" about the age difference between Trump and Melania, saying, "he's almost 80, and she's younger than I am."
Kimmel said, "I understand that the first lady had a stressful experience over the weekend, and probably every weekend is pretty stressful in that house."
He also said that Trump is "allowed to say whatever he wants to say" and expressed sympathy for those affected by the April 25 shooting. "Just because no one got killed doesn't mean it wasn't traumatic. It's scary," he said.
"We should come together and be best. We really should. But if you want us to believe that a joke I made 3 days before this dinner had any effect on anything that happened, well then, maybe someone should look into this psychic lady, too," Kimmel said.
