Reform UK leader Nigel Farage's party made significant gains against British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour Party during the United Kingdom local and devolved elections on Thursday, May 7.
Farage said that he believes this victory is important in bringing a change in the United Kingdom that was long overdue.
He also claimed that his party would bring about the end of the Labour Party’s rule.
'Complete Reshaping of British Politics'
According to a report by Mediaite, Farage said his party's victory will alter the country's political landscape.
The Reform UK leader further stated, “You are witnessing a historic shift in British politics.”
An X post on Reform UK Party's performance in the local elections.
Following the declaration of the results, Farage said, “It’s a big, big day — not just for our party, but for a complete reshaping of British politics in every way.”
Notably, in the 2024 elections, the Labour Party had won by a landslide.
The May 2026 elections included approximately 5,000 local government seats in England, alongside mayoral and parliamentary contests in Wales and Scotland.
According to The Sunday Guardian, Farage mentioned that the traditional political spectrum is changing.
“Forget about left versus right; there is no longer any left versus right. It has all disappeared, vanished into thin air.” he said.
He also stated that his party has been receiving “amazing percentage votes in Labour heartlands.”
Farage is known to be a close ally of President Donald Trump in Europe and has previously expressed support for the latter's policies, including his stance on anti-immigration.
The Reform UK leader plans to campaign in the 2029 U.K. general elections.
Pressure Mounts on Keir Starmer
With the election results going against Starmer, pressure seems to be mounting on him -- both from the public and within the Labour Party.
Following the results, Starmer shared a nearly three-minute video on X, discussing his vision and the change his party had promised.
“The results are tough. They are very tough,” he said.
Starmer stated that he takes responsibility for the defeat and noted the party must reflect on the outcome.
The British Prime Minister noted that he remains committed to stabilizing public finances and improving public services.
“Tough days like this don’t weaken my resolve to deliver the change that I promised,” he said.
Following the results, reports circulated that Labour Party member Ed Miliband called for Starmer to resign.
This has sparked speculations about Starmer's future within the party.
