Apart from being a legendary actor, De Niro is also known for not mincing his words. On the stage, he used his time to take aim at President Donald Trump and his alleged past ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

During a comedic sketch where a group of celebrities sat on Colbert's sofa and questioned him, De Niro took the opportunity to throw heavy political punches.

Taking Colbert's seat, De Niro asked him a random question, just like other guests. The Taxi Driver actor asked, “What number were you thinking of?”

Replying, Colbert said, "There’s a hint as to what the answer is, because whenever somebody answers the question and gives the wrong answer, I always say no; and when I give the right answer, which has happened at least twice — Meryl Streep and Ethan Hawke guessed correctly — and Ethan Hawke goes immediately, ‘I know what it is. It’s three.’ That’s the number I was thinking of.”

De Niro then took a jab at Trump, saying, “OK. Because I thought it would have been two million point five, or two and a half million. That’s the number of Epstein files Trump still hasn’t released.”

His comment received a mix of gasps and cheers from the crowd.

Hollywood Stars Appear as Guests at 'Late Show' Final Week

The political portion was one among numerous elements included in the week-long lead-up to the final episode of The Late Show.

In the buildup to the finale, Colbert was joined by famous figures.

Joining in on the fun to grill the host were Hollywood stars like Ben Stiller, Martha Stewart and Aubrey Plaza, along with De Niro.

The concluding extended episode is set to be broadcast on the evening of Thursday, May 21. This will bring an end to the 11-year run of one of America’s most popular talk shows.

'I Think the Next Day, Everyone’s Fired'

Colbert recently revealed that CBS asked him and his staff to vacate their offices immediately following the final episode. During an appearance at the Strike Force Five podcast, he said, "[When] we come back, I'm cleaning out the office. We gotta get our s--- out of here. No one’s got a job after that night."

The final episode of 'The Late Show' with Stephen Colbert will air on May 21.

"I think the next day, everyone’s fired. I think maybe the crew has some time to clear out like the studio, but the staff all has to be gone," he stated.

This will also mark the end of the entire 33-year-old Late Show franchise, which originally began in 1993 with David Letterman as the host.

In July 2025, CBS announced that The Late Show would not be continuing after its current season, stating that the termination was "purely a financial" decision.

Even though the sudden decision surprised fans and caused some network controversy, Colbert remains in good spirits.

According to USA Today, he joked that the show's end might have actually "saved my life."
