Kash Patel Faces Mounting Questions as Report Flags Behavior Inside FBI
FBI Director Kash Patel Under Fire as Reports Allege Drinking Concerns and Erratic Conduct
Behind the scenes at the FBI, concerns are reportedly building around Director Kash Patel and his conduct on the job. Officials across the White House, Congress, and insiders within the FBI have raised questions about what they describe as uneven attendance and behavior that has, at times, drawn attention.
Sources who spoke to The Atlantic claimed that Patel has been “known to drink to the point of obvious intoxication.” Multiple insiders suggested the issue has become difficult to ignore. One moment in particular appears to have caused alarm internally.
At one point in April 2026, Patel was briefly locked out of the FBI’s internal computer system due to a technical error. According to the report, he believed the lockout meant he had been dismissed and quickly told aides he believed he had been fired. Two aides reportedly described the reaction as a “freak-out”.
The report further stated that, "But Patel, according to multiple current officials, as well as former officials who have stayed close to him, is deeply concerned that his job is in jeopardy."
Several moments outside Washington have drawn attention as well. During an official visit to Italy in February, Patel was seen celebrating with the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team following their gold medal win, including footage of him drinking beer with players.
The report states the moment was noted by senior leadership. At the same time, officials pointed to broader concerns, including alleged use of FBI aircraft for personal matters and what insiders described as a tendency to party.
Some insiders suggested that if leadership changes were to happen, Patel’s name could be among those under consideration. “We’re all just waiting for the word," one official said.

Patel has pushed back strongly. In a statement issued through the FBI, he said: “Print it, all false, I’ll see you in court - bring your checkbook.”
The situation is unfolding as Patel’s leadership style has also drawn attention internally. Reports indicate some staff members have faced polygraph testing as part of efforts to identify leaks, while others have described adjusting to his approach on a day-to-day basis.
Claims about Patel’s affinity for partying have surfaced before. According to a New York Times report in January 2026, his staff said he was 'unhappy attending a meeting in an office setting' and that he enjoys 'social events, soccer games, jet skiing, helicopter tour.'
There are also concerns among some officials that alleged behavior at the top could have wider implications, particularly during a period of heightened international tension. The White House has dismissed the claims.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described Patel as a “critical player on the Administration’s law and order team,” rejecting the report’s characterization. For now, the claims and denials sit side by side, but the spotlight around Patel’s role appears to be growing as questions continue to surface.
