Tech mogul Elon Musk has highlighted an alleged pattern among international governments attempting to restrict his social media platform, X.

The billionaire recently reacted to and reshared a viral meme that mocks the typical cycle that seems to repeat whenever a government threatens to shut down the app.

The meme was originally shared on X by a popular account named "Planet of Memes."

This meme features Musk at the center, following an amusing but realistic timeline of occurrences.

At first, a nation warns that X would be banned there. Rather than making the platform unpopular, it leads to much hype, resulting in X becoming popular in that particular country.

Secondly, the application becomes the top trending story in the news, with everyone scrambling to download it.

At the end of the meme is a caption stating "Elon chuckles."

Musk found the meme hilarious and highly accurate. He reshared the post on his official X handle and added a short, two-word reply: “Every time,” along with a laughing emoji.

Countries Where X Faced Ban Threats

This meme makes some sense as X has faced ban threats in several major countries. However, it only bounced back stronger.

The best example of the same is Brazil. The country faced an extensive legal dispute spanning several months involving Musk and the Brazilian Supreme Court concerning content moderation and freedom of speech.

The Brazilian government banned the app temporarily for several weeks, cutting off millions of users from accessing it. X ultimately succumbed to the rulings issued by the court, but was later reintroduced, according to The Guardian.

X has faced similar legal friction and temporary blocks in nations like Pakistan, Turkey and Nigeria in the past.

The Nigerian government banned X for seven months after the platform deleted a post by the country's president. The ban was lifted after X agreed to open a local office and manage tax agreements, according to the BBC.

It is worth noting that in almost every single case, the threat of a potential ban caused a massive surge in public interest.

This led people to use virtual private networks (VPNs) to access the app until it was officially restored.

Social Media Users React to Elon Musk's Meme

Many users on social media reacted to the meme Musk re-shared on his handle. Agreeing with Musk, one wrote, "Every “ban x” headline just gives this app another 10 million doomscrollers."

Another cited the Nigeria incident and said, "There was a time , former and late president of Nigeria Buhari ban "x" in Nigeria, Boom everybody, all Nigerians join, X become more popular. The effects both positive and negative where overwhelmed. Few months later, the ban was lifted."

An X user reacts to the 'X' meme reshared by Elon Musk.

An individual commented, "Every single time Elon’s ultimate plot armor: country threatens ban → X surges to #1 news app → Elon chuckles. The cycle is undefeated!"

"Every ban threat becomes free marketing for X," wrote one user.

"At this point, banning X is starting to look less like censorship, and more like a highly effective growth strategy. Do platform bans actually reduce influence long term or mostly amplify attention and push more people toward the platform?" added another user.
