President Donald Trump is considering another White House renovation project. He plans to renovate the existing helipad in the South Lawn of the White House by building a permanent one in its place.

The idea has already been proposed, and a design for the helipad has already been discussed with his associates. The suggestion comes after the current generation of helicopters presents a severe risk when they are landing, and poses an immense risk during landing.

Trump Plans Permanent Helipad Over Major Issue Involving Marine Corps Helicopter

Trump proposes the construction of a permanent helipad on the South Lawn.

After shifting his attention from the reinforced ballroom in the White House, Donald Trump has proposed another construction project at the White House. According to exclusive reports from The Washington Post, Trump wants a permanent helipad installed because the grass gets scorched every time a Marine Corps helicopter lands on the spot.

Unlike Trump’s recent construction ideas, the discussion for a permanent helipad has been on the table for several years because of the problem it causes. Previously, the VH-3D Sea King was the fulltime presidential helicopter, which did not affect the grass on the South Lawn.

However, the VH-92A Patriot has replaced the older helicopter model. Interestingly, it is significantly more powerful than the previous model, which happens to be so powerful that it burns the grass. Hence, it is unable to deploy directly from the White House.

The VH-3D’s situation was no better because it lands on small boards, which are placed underneath its wheels, preventing the grass from getting damaged. But the Sea King is set to remain in service for only 2026. As a result, officials are considering building a helipad.

An anonymous retired military officer clarified, “This is not a Trump wild idea.” They explained that the past officials had discouraged building a helipad due to the nostalgia the area holds. Now, with the President encouraging change on campus, the proposal has once again gained support from officials.

They added, “No one wanted to invest the political capital and time in this until they had ruled out other technical mitigation options.” While a White House spokesperson declined to comment on the proposal for a permanent helipad, Spokespeople for Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky praised the helicopter’s capabilities.

“The VH‑92A Patriot is a recognizable patriotic asset known around the globe for safety, security and reliability,” they said in a statement. Furthermore, people aware of the issue cautioned that the plans to build a permanent helipad might change before the formal announcement.

Several Officials Don’t Support Trump’s Proposal to Build Permanent Helipad

In the same report by The Washington Post, Ray L’Heureux, a retired colonel, opposed the building of a helipad. He said that the idea often comes up, but he criticized the proposal, calling it “stupid from an aesthetic standpoint.” He believed the construction would ruin the area's “historic” value.

He added, “I do think that nothing there is broken — so don’t mess with it.” Additionally, in 2009, Robert Gates, the then-Defense Secretary, canceled the VH-92A for the president due to cost overruns. Interestingly, the scorching problem of the helicopter was made public during Trump’s first presidential term.

A 2018 GAO report claimed the helicopter was not meeting a key system capability required to land without “adversely” affecting the landing zone. During Joe Biden’s administration, the issue was not resolved, leaving them shocked.

An anonymous person aware of the issue said, “It wasn’t just that the issue wasn’t resolved. It was that the issue wasn’t on a path to be resolved.” Since the issue persists with the helicopter, it might be used during time-sensitive occasions to prevent damage to the ground.
