Although it was meant to be a formal and proud moment, President Donald Trump turned the Greek Independence Day celebration awkward by revealing his “disturbing” nickname for his son's ex-fiancée. While giving a speech, he addressed U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle, calling her “Kimberlay.”

“Kimberlay. Kimberly Guilfoyle. I love calling her Kimberlay. That's my little pet name, but you are the greatest. I hope you come back here in 12 years or whenever the term ends,” Trump said. The nickname surprised many people as it felt a bit strange for such an official event.

A video posted on X shows Donald Trump addressing Kimberly Guilfoyle with a controversial nickname.

The internet was quick to react to Trump's pet name for Guilfoyle. Right after Trump mentioned that he prefers calling her “Kimberlay” which many assumed was derogatory for its sexual innuendo, users on X began sharing their opinions and concerns.

While many called it “disturbing,” one user wrote, “She is Don Jr.’s EX girlfriend. She was given the ambassadorship in Greece, to keep her quiet and happy. Don Jr has a new girlfriend. If my ex-boyfriend’s father had a sexual nickname for me, I would be highly disturbed.”

Another user questioned if Trump “just crudely insult the woman who was almost his daughter-in-law??”. Some users went on to call his behavior “gross” and “disrespectful,” accusing Trump of being “unable to control his basest instincts.”

However, the controversy grew even bigger when a few people brought up Jeffrey Epstein in their reactions. Suggesting how the nickname sounded “creepy” and raised questions about Trump’s past, one user wrote, “Not hard to see why he is protecting the Epstein files."

Guilfoyle Helped Trump During the 2024 Elections

Meanwhile, despite the pet name, Guilfoyle has remained a close ally of Trump over the years. While her silent support for him began while working at Fox News from 2006 to 2018, Guilfoyle played a major role in shaping Trump's 2024 election campaign.

Following the election, Trump announced her nomination as the next U.S. ambassador to Greece in December 2024. She was officially confirmed on September 18, 2025, with a close 51–47 vote. Since winning, Guilfoyle has been living in Athens at Jefferson House, which is used for both living and hosting events.

As for her personal life, the 57-year-old was once married to California Governor Gavin Newsom from 2001 to 2006. She later began a relationship with Donald Trump Jr. and was reportedly engaged to him in 2020. However, Trump Jr. has been engaged to Bettina Anderson since December 2025.

In addition, despite people's criticism over Trump's nickname for Guilfoyle, the 57-year-old has praised her bond with Trump. Further, speaking with the New York Times, she said “I’m loyal, I’m smart, that I’m effective. And I’ll do whatever it takes to get the job done.”

Guilfoyle said, “That’s one of the things the president loves about me.” She even claimed to be happy for her ex-fiancé, Trump Jr. So, despite people's outrage, there's no bad blood between the president and Guilfoyle.
