Donald Trump mocked the chilling interaction between his longtime rivals Gavin Newsom and late-night Bill Maher. Maher asked some challenging questions to Newsom, and also alleged that he had tendencies to “imitate” Trump. The President accused the California Governor of “lying” during the interview, but also targeted the host for not firmly cross-questioning his guest.

Giving his opinion on Newsom’s appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher, the President took to his Truth Social account to state that “Bill Maher got eaten up” by the California Governor when the latter said that California is “doing well.”

Bill Maher accuses Gavin Newsom of allegedly imitating Donald Trump

According to The Daily Beast, the POTUS called this claim by Newsom a “complete lie” and also took a jibe at Maher for not challenging his guest, “not even a little bit.” He also took a dig at the host’s ratings on his post.

Donald Trump blasted Bill Maher and Fox News on Saturday, May 2, 2026, while expressing his opinion on the late-night host’s interview with Gavin Newsom.

A part of Trump’s Truth Social post read, “I hate seeing Fox, and other Conservative Outlets, constantly making Low Rated Bill Maher ‘relevant’ as it pertains to the Republican Party, and beyond.” He alleged that Maher is making the network look weak, stupid, and ineffective.

Bill Maher asked some challenging questions to Gavin Newsom.

He added, “Fox should stop putting this person on. He’s not representing us. You look weak, stupid, and ineffective, and I hate seeing that.” The President then directed his dig towards Newsom and called him a person of “admittedly low IQ” who he claimed has confessed that he cannot read.

The POTUS furthermore called the former San Francisco mayor “incompetent and dumb” and someone who took Bill Maher, “over the coals.”

However, the social media users were not quite enamored with Donald Trump’s rant. They took to their X handles to share their opinion on his dig at Newsom and Maher through the Truth Social post.

One of the social media users wrote, “Does Trump ever stop crying? People grow weary.” An X user wrote, “I wish he cared about the economy, healthcare, and gas as much as he cared about TV shows.” A user on X added, “Grandpa is ready for the nursing home. Newsom will be on his mind for a long, long time. Trump is a malignant narcissist.”

On the President’s dig at Gavin Newsom’s IQ, an X user wrote, “And no one ever challenges Trump to prove his own ‘high IQ’ by taking a test in public.” Another user on X presented a surprising piece of information and also exposed Trump’s alleged hypocrisy in the process. The comment said, “Too funny considering that his handpicked Kennedy Center’s Board of trustees just selected Bill Maher as the recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for Comedy.

Meanwhile, Maher and Newsom’s conversation was a controversial affair as the late-night host alleged that the California Governor was “imitating” Donald Trump.

He backed his statement by pointing out Gavin Newsom’s all-caps social media post, which tends to bear some resemblance to Trump’s signature style. Maher quipped, “Among all the people who may or may not be running, you are the one who kind of imitates his style with the trolling—you’re suing Fox now, I understand. That sounds exactly like what he does.”

Newsom replied to this and said, “I’m trying to put a mirror up to Donald Trump. We’re just trying to reflect that reality and express the absurdity of all of this.” The question was also a reference to the California Governor’s $787 million lawsuit against Fox News, alleging that the network falsely claimed that he had a telephonic conversation with Donald Trump.
