According to a report by Variety, Season 4 of The White Lotus is set at the Cannes Film Festival, with White turning his satirical focus on the international film industry.
The project is reportedly generating considerable buzz. An anonymous source told the outlet that Bonham Carter exited the project within just a week of joining because she and White had "creative differences."
The source said White had written a character for Bonham Carter — that of a "washed-out star who is chasing a comeback" — and demanded a "boisterous performance" that she was not comfortable with.
However, as mentioned earlier, Dern has replaced Bonham Carter to join an already star-studded cast.
An HBO spokesperson told People magazine, “It had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align” with the creator’s vision.
“HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won't get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon,” the statement added.
