Body Language Expert Decoded Melania Trump's 'Cold' Demeanor Toward Usha Vance and Says It Was No Accident
Melania Trump and Usha Vance appeared together Wednesday at the 113th annual First Lady's Luncheon at the Washington Hilton on April 23, 2026. The gathering centered on policies and programs impacting children and youth across the country.
Meanwhile, a a body language expert analyzed the interaction between the two women.
In videos from the event that circulated on social media, Usha Vance introduced Melania Trump, citing her achievements as a model, businesswoman, best-selling author and now a movie producer. As Vance concluded the first lady’s introduction with a smile, Melania approached the lectern to address her speech.
According to the Irish Star, body language expert Judi James examined how the women interacted on stage.

She said, “(Vance) thoughtfully reaches out to turn the page on the notes for her too, and we can hear a 'thank you' from Melania although there is no greeting ritual between the two women when you might have expected a hug or even a brief touch plus some warm eye contact of acknowledgment.”
James noted that Vance stood beside Melania and turned to smile, while the first lady faced outward, shifting her gaze and smile across the room. The expert suggested that the former Slovenian model’s apparent coldness could stem from a “businesslike” demeanor.

In her words, “Melania has been very much in businesslike mode recently, and perhaps this body language was pre-arranged to make her or both of them appear more like serious heavyweights with some powerful messages rather than adhering to the more traditional first lady body language traits of tactile affection and empathy.”
The report notes that the event, which dates to 1912, is an annual bipartisan gathering. It recognizes the current first lady, highlights her initiatives, and supports national nonprofit organizations through fundraising.
According to USA Today, the event, held in a ballroom at the Washington Hilton, highlighted her efforts to create a better future for young people, including a recent bill she has supported to safeguard children in the US foster care system.
Mrs. Trump told the audience of nearly 2,000,, “Progress is not granted, you must be the composer, embolden your influence in the community with a strong vision to the future.”

Following their remarks, both women were honored with gifts from the Congressional Club Museum and Foundation, which has been hosting the annual event since 1912.
