At such a time, Michael Wolff, a biographer who has covered Trump closely, said that the president's behavior has become increasingly erratic in recent weeks.

The biographer described the situation as a "civil emergency" during a recent podcast appearance.

Wolff said that he believes Trump's handling of the Iran conflict and other domestic pressures may be contributing to the shift in behavior.

Donald Trump responds to questions surrounding his mental health.

Appearing as a guest on The Daily Beast's Inside Trump's Head podcast, Wolff said, "Let's maybe begin with the more down-earth question: Is Trump crazy?"

He stated that Trump and the White House should not be seen as a "reasonable enterprise," adding, "that is a civil emergency."

Wolff criticized The New York Times for framing developments in the Trump administration as matters of "great significance" and "great gravity" without stating the issue plainly.

The biographer said that he wanted the outlet to publish a headline reading, "President of the United States is crazy," noting that the paper had come close to addressing Trump's "erratic behavior" without using such direct language.

Wolff opined that the president’s actions demand calls for concern.

“But I think it is coming faster and more furious in these past weeks, probably prompted by the war,” he said.

He stated that Trump appears uncertain about how to resolve the Iran conflict or find an exit from the situation.

Wolff also cited the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shootings in Minneapolis as a factor he believes has contributed to the president's agitation.

In January 2026, ICE agents fatally shot Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, prompting widespread demonstrations across Minneapolis and other cities.

Wolff also referred to a post Trump shared on Truth Social depicting an AI-generated image of a Jesus Christ-like figure, which drew criticism on social media, and to Trump's statement warning Iran that he would "end their civilization."

Referring to Trump's recent public statements, Wolff said, "What he says is more and more distinct from cut off from [and] separate from reality."

The biographer also said that rapid inflation in the U.S. economy has added to the pressures surrounding the administration, and that Trump has grown increasingly short-tempered with those around him.

Michael Wolff Discusses Donald Trump's ‘Behavior Pattern’

In the same podcast episode, Wolff addressed the broader issue of aging in American political leadership, saying the demands of high office take a visible toll on older officeholders.

"I think that's where we are in the Trump administration. And they're there, there is a thing," Wolff said.

He added that observers have noted a shift in Trump's "behavior pattern," describing some instances as unusual and others as extreme.

Podcast host Joanna Coles recalled attending a White House event approximately two years ago at which Trump appeared fatigued and engaged with guests for only about 25 minutes.

Coles then drew a contrast with the approach taken during former President Joe Biden's administration, which she said attempted to shield such difficulties from public view.
