Standing behind the presidential seal during a White House Mother’s Day event for military mothers on Wednesday, May 6, Melania praised Trump while introducing him on stage.
Speaking to the crowd, she called her husband “strong Commander-in-Chief”.
“Most know my husband as the strong Commander-in-Chief, but his empathy transcends the role and shape a caring leader,” the first lady said.
As soon as she said the word “empathy,” Trump smiled and gave a small shrug, prompting laughter from people in the audience.
This led Melania to join in the laughter as well, who continued with the rest of her speech with a smile.
She went on to say that the president “constantly remembers each and every American soldier as his own child.” After Melania finished introducing him, the two shared kisses.
Later, officials from the Trump administration called the event a “tremendous success.”
Videos of people cracking up made rounds on the internet.
Netizens React to White House Moment
After the video of Melania praising Trump during a White House Mother’s Day event went viral, it sparked strong reactions online.
People appeared unanimously praising the president’s response to the crowd’s laughter.
One user wrote, “Love seeing moments like this, Melania calling out Trump's empathy and the whole room, including him, just laughing it shows he's secure enough to take a joke and she's right his caring side is real people forget that behind the strong leadership, there's a guy who actually gives a d*mn.”
"A person who can laugh at themselves is admirable. And a leader who frees countries of cruel leadership EXHIBITS empathy, They don’t just TALK a good game with no follow-up!!" another wrote, referring to Trump's airstrikes on Iran.
An individual defended Trump against critics, saying, "The ability to laugh at ones self is a sign of emotional maturity. The inability to find anything redeemable in a man with emotional maturity is a sign of ideological perversion.”
Meanwhile, another added, "Good to see a room that can laugh together while still honoring the moment.”
